Grinding roasted coffee beans
Some people tend to grind all their coffee beans once they open a new roasted coffee bag... That is wrong. Its true that it may be faster, but it is also the fastest way of losing coffee freshness (see coffee storage tips).
The best way to enjoy fresh coffee is to grind the coffee beans just before you are ready to brew your espresso or regular brewed coffee. This way you will get maximum aroma and flavour.
Tips for grinding coffee for espresso machines:
If the coffee flow is too slow, more than 25 - 30 sec. for one shot of espresso (30 ml), you should change your grinder setting to grind the coffee beans coarser. If your coffee flow is too fast, less that 15- 20 sec. for one espresso shot, you should change the coffee grinder setting to grind finer.
Setting the right grinding level is a matter of trial by error, there is no such thing as one right "number" per coffee blend. It depends on many factors, but mainly the type of espresso machine that you have, the freshness of the coffee beans, the roasted blend and the humidity in the room. Some coffee machines may require finer grind than others, therefore, equipping yourself with a good matching coffee grinder as a pair is important. Checkout our Package deals section for recommended pairs of semi automatic espresso machines with coffee grinders.
Grinding flavoured or Decaffeinated coffee beans in your day to day coffee grinder is not recommended because it may adhere some flavoring taste to the grinding burrs.
